Gorgonzola hosts Navigations Air Systems (NAS) domain. The activity of NAS domain: avionics, navigation and radar systems for civil air traffic and technologies supporting the activities of civilian and military pilots, ATC controllers and technicians of several airlines, air traffic control agencies and Air Force around the world. Italy is the Group’s Competence center for the design, production and delivery of Navigation Aids products and Competence Centre for the delivery of non-Radar Surveillance Products.

We are currently looking for a System Engineering Manager to join Thales Land and Air Systems in its Navaids Center of Competence Gorgonzola (near Milan).

The System Engineering Manager will collaborate with other engineering disciplines to orient and design solutions that meet customer expectations. He/ She provides Systems Engineering delivery leadership. This role involves working closely with Bid Managers to capture customer requirements, orient the solution, design the selected solution and deliver the selected option within time, budget and schedule.

Key Responsibilities and Tasks:

  • Capture of customer requirements and the flow down into compliant subsystem specifications
  • Deliver technical proposals and generate cost estimates for future activities
  • Propose and develop architectural options and conduct system / subsystem trade-offs
  • Lead system design, test and flight trial activities
  • Ensure the necessary clearances are in place (e.g. security, safety, export control and spectrum)
  • Agree Interface Exchange Requirements and acceptance criteria with the customer
  • Manage the progressive sign off of Requirements through the project lifecycle
  • Critically review inputs from the different teams (Solution, Software, Hardware)
  • Produce system test and flight-check definitions and procedures
  • Support to reviews at all levels of the design, development and testing of the function;
  • Liaise with customers and subcontractors on technical issues.

Experience needed:

  • Substantial experience in System design and development of complex Radio Frequency hardware and software systems. Knowledge of and experience in:
    • RF System integration awareness
    • Experience of environmental constraints (temperature and humidity)
  • Proven experience in working collaboratively across multiple product development and specialist domain teams (Obeya, Problem solving, kaizen,…).
  • Proficient in the use of Requirement Management tools (e.g. DOORS), configuration management tools, technical documentation tools, and problem reporting tools (JIRA)
  • Understanding of MBSE and implementation and toolsets such as Capella or Rhapsody.
  • Proven ability to work in a multinational and multicultural team with varied degrees of experience.
  • Experience working with network systems and networking principles
  • Ability to develop innovative and low risk practical engineering strategies to manage a complex project across the full project lifecycle.
  • Technical leadership – with a proven ability to build and sustain good working relationships with staff, peers and managers, customers and other stakeholders.
  • Strong appreciation of Safety and Safety Assurance within the Engineering discipline and Domain and working knowledge of Airworthiness regulations.
  • Experience of working within a safety environment in a aeronautic/transportation or similar industry
  • Familiarity with Project management and delivery processes and practices, commercial acumen and a robust approach to budget and schedule control.

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in field with 7+ years’ experience
  • Proven track record engaging and influencing strong stakeholders
  • Interpersonal skills – the ability to communicate effectively with peers and act proactively within a team environment -
  • Excellent problem solving skills
  • English and Italian fluent is a must
  • Ability to speak additional languages as German  or French is a benefit
  • The role will require travel for approximately 10% of the time
